"Trier, Germany's oldest city, is on the Internet. Old? Who said old? This attractive, trilingual home page is young, dynamic and chock full of facts and data about Trier and its attractions. It makes every interest group feel individually attended to. The site map makes it easy to get a quick grip on the profuse profferings."

Jury's opinion:
"People tend to think that combining church and Internet produces dreary texts and clumsy proselytism, and then, suddenly, you run across this: the Brothers of Mercy of our Lady of Perpetual Help demonstrate par excellence how to make a solemn subject like life in a religious order both multimedial and entertaining. One of this site's best features is Brother Johnny, an animated cartoon figure who takes the visitor on a 10-minute slide show through a workday in the lives of (real-life) brothers Johannes Maria, Peter and Tobias - all to the tune of Hammond-organ-like midi music. Likewise media-appropriate is the E-Mailable novena "prayers for reflection and meditation", which the user can have sent to any address nine days running."

Commentary:
"Monastic life online. Even old monasteries now have their own on-ramps to the data highway. The Brothers of Mercy of our Lady of Perpetual Help, for example, are showing that they can do more than pray the rosary. They've studded their web site with lots of skillful graphics. These friars will fill your monitor with an impressive stained-glass catholic ambience. Let Brother Johnny be your virtual guide through this computerized cloister. He'll fill you in on the order's history and workaday routine and, if you wish, put you on a mailing list for a daily devotion and aphorism. The brothers' novena, however, is only recommended for practiced prayers. Novices might prefer to just accompany likeable little Johnny through a slide show portraying a day in the life of Brother Johannes and Brother Peter, whose activities comprise much more than pure contemplation. Indeed, the order is not for naught named "Brothers of Mercy". They are deeply engaged in works of mercy. If, at the end of the tour, you feel a desire to radically alter your life - professionally or otherwise - you can sign up for a few days' stay at the monastery, getting to know the ways of the Brothers of Mercy of our Lady of Perpetual Help."

"ONLINE TODAY tested Germany's online bookshops for content, design, service and delivery time. Who has what to offer? Twelve major marketers were vying for honors. The outcome: 1st prize for Buchhandlung Steiner, 2nd for Telebuch.de, 3rd for Libri.de, 4th for Boulevard.de, 5th for Buchkatalog.de, 6th for Seven-Books.de, 7th for Buchhandel.de, 8th for A-Zet.de, 9th for Auslese.com, and 10th for Buch.de.
Range of supply: The Dr. Claus Steiner bookshop in Idstein delivers "any book available from anywhere." Look for yours in the fast KNO database (300,000 titles) or in the huge list of in-stock books (800,000 tiles). A selection of new publications are reviewed periodically. Design: Clear-cut with a Keith Haring touch.
Service: A-okay - they'll even draw up lists of pertinent-subject titles for you. Even though this shop offers free delivery anywhere in Germany, they sent off the first test-order book by UPS the same day, and the other book a day later. And payment was by invoice. Brilliant!
Delivery time for test order: 2 - 3 days (via United Parcel Service)"

Jury's opinion:
"As general opinion has it, clerical organizations are not that up on technology, but the Trier diocese proves otherwise. This site deals with ecclesiastical matters and general social problems professionally, informatively and entertainingly. From the Bishop's newsletter to the German Caritas Association, you'll find everything of interest to Christian people, including a very informative array of information for members of the civilian national service. A glance through the guest book and the excellent discussion fora suffices to see that this site is an attention-getter. It is also a well-done attempt not only to add content to the Internet, but also to make the Christian faith more attractive again."

Commentary:
Religious web sites often appear rather dreary, and they rarely transcend the level of litanies and ho-hum old contents. The Brothers of Mercy of our Lady of Perpetual Help constitute a pleasant exception to the rule. They take such a light, unconventional approach to serious matters, that an occasional visit to their site can be a real sensual treat. With music and a slide show, comic figure "Brother Johnny" accompanies the visitor through a day in the life of three monks. One can even order an E-Mail novena - and get a new prayer sent every day for nine days. Of course, there is also lots of information about the order and its charitable institutions. Not to forget a quite professional online shop, where all the requisite devotional articles are available at the click of a mouse. The site even has room for job advertisements, a daily aphorism and a calendar of events. This web site outshines many a secular site in its artistic and substantive perfection. I say THANK YOU for this humdinger of a home page."

Commentary:
"Soft and gentle organ music wafts over from the loudspeaker, and a droll little monk in a black habit peeks out across the monitor from between stained-glass windows and a Virgin Mary statue. This, then, is a monastery gone Internet: Germany's first virtual monk - "Brother Johnny" - is a frocked comic figure who since July of this year has been doing diligent duty at the roughly 100-page web site of the Trier community of the " Brothers of Mercy of our Lady of Perpetual Help" - the Internet address which the Trier-based order peppered with a pretty pinch of self-irony before posting it on the World Wide Web.
In addition to finding out all about life in the Brothers of Mercy Order, the faithful also can subscribe to E-Mail prayers. "We won 150 prayer-sayers this way in the first two weeks," revels Brother Tobias, the 29-year-old head of the online project. One long-term goal of the monks' virtual involvement, of course, is to attract aspiring young cloister candidates.
Devout data devotees will find the site well worth visiting for yet another reason: in their Brothers' shop, the Trierers offer an array of online devotional articles like "Mary Help's" candles and good books about the life of the order's "Blessed Founder Peter Friedhofen." At any rate, it looks as though virtual Brother Johnny is well on his way to becoming a cult figure: the Brothers' web site is taking about 5000 hits a month."

"Thanks for this great home page and web design. These "Brothers of Mercy of our Lady of Perpetual Help" have a good sense of humor. They also have good technical expertise - and equally good ideas: with music and a slide show, comic "Brother Johnny" shows us a day in the life of three monks. Order an E-Mail "novena" to get a prayer a day for nine days."

"Who says the Catholic church is a conservative stick-in-the-mud? The community (= Catholic confraternity with simple or no vows) "Brothers of Mercy of our Lady of Perpetual Help", originally founded by a priest named Peter Friedhofen, is presenting itself and its work on the Internet. At the above address, you can accompany some brothers on a day's work, order a set of novena prayers by E-Mail, and purchase the order's publications at the "Brothers' Shop". It you have any questions, just turn trustingly to the tiny comic figure Brother Johnny. Anyone who has been there and then renounces his/her faith - is beyond help."

"The Brothers of Mercy of our Lady of Perpetual Help are demonstrating that faith and the church do not have to be boring and dryasdust. With a great sense of humor and some sharp ideas, these monks show us around their order - ably assisted by comic figure Brother Johnny and his jocular, organ-accompanied slide show depicting a day in the life and work of the friars (plus some at-the-office gymnastics). Even the faithless can't help smiling. Why, even an atheist would have to find this program fun."

Drop by Dr. Vorbeck's consulting rooms and pick up some information about amalgam, better ways to brush your teeth, jaw-hinge problems, surgical implants, paradontitis, services (advertising) and more. It's nice to know, for example, that there is a dentist out there, whom one can ask for advice by E-Mail - and he promises to answer immediately. Commentary:
"The fact that marketing companies have taken to trawling the Internet for young target groups is nothing new. A few weeks ago, the Vatican added its own home page to the world of web reality. But to run across a German Catholic diocese on the Internet is a real rarity. One can hardly speak of a "product" to be sold, and this is not just some confraternity looking for new members. All the more astounding, then, how professional the Trier diocese' appearance on the Internet turned out to be (http://www.dioezese-trier.de). Many a marketer would do well to pattern his/her own web presence after this one's optics and composition - if not necessarily in the spiritual sense. rdts, Trier, is responsible for the Trier diocese' Internet appearance."
